The Mystical Story of the Separation of the Island of Bali and Java

MANIK ANGKERAN

In ancient times, the islands of Bali and Java were still a single land unit. But now, these two islands are separated by an ocean which is called the Bali Strait.
1. Starting from a story in the Kingdom of Daha, Kediri, East Java
One day in the Kingdom of Daha there was a priest named Mpu Sidi Mantra. Mpu Sidi Mantra is known as a mandraguna who is powerful, he is also known to be wealthy. Mpu Sidi Mantra has a son named Manik Angkeran. Mpu Sidi Mantra and his wife really love their only child.
2. Manik Angkeran has the bad character of being greedy and likes to gamble
Mpu Sidi Mantra and his wife were very sad because Manik Angkeran had bad character. He was known as a child who liked to have fun and spent his parents' wealth on gambling. If he loses at gambling, he will borrow money from other people. This made Manik Angkeran have a lot of debt everywhere.
3. Many people are looking for Manik Angkeran because they cannot afford to pay their debts
His parents' wealth was dwindling after the Manik Angkeran spent so many years. Many people are looking for Manik Angkeran to collect debts from him. Manik Angkeran is very scared, because several people are looking for him who carry various sharp weapons such as machetes and swords. The frightened Manik Angkeran hid in the house of his father, Mpu Sidi Mantra, while begging for help. Mpu Sidi Mantra came out to approach these people and he promised to pay off his son's debt. Because they were day
4. Mpu Sidi Mantra asked for the help of a dragon named Naga Basuki
In the evening, Mpu Sidi Mantra prayed to ask God Almighty for help regarding the Manik Angkeran problem. Finally, Mpu Sidi Mantra received instructions to go to Mount Agung to meet a dragon guarding the treasures in that place. Arriving at the crater of Mount Agung, Mpu Sidi Mantra sat cross-legged while ringing the bell with the accompaniment of his incantation to summon a dragon named Naga Basuki. Naga Basuki then came out and Mpu Sidi Mantra told him what was the purpose of his desire to come to that place.
Naga Basuki felt sorry to hear the story from Mpu Sidi Mantra, Naga Basuki then took gold and diamonds from his scales to give to Mpu Sidi Mantra. "Take this treasure, enough to pay off your son's debts. Don't forget to advise him to change," said Naga Basuki giving advice. After thanking Naga Basuki, Mpu Sidi Mantra said goodbye to return to East Java. He then gave all of these treasures to Manik Angkeran while advising him not to repeat the deed. Manik Angkeran was very happy to get gold and diamonds. He then sold the property to pay off his debts. It turns out that the money from paying off the debt still has quite a lot left, so he uses it again to gamble. But the incident repeated itself, he lost the gamble and went back into debt.
5. Manik Angkeran was killed by Naga Basuki because of his greed
Manik Angkeran again asks for his father's help. But his father no longer wanted to help him. Manik Angkeran remembers that his father once asked Naga Basuki for help on Mount Agung. He then stole his father's magic bell and then headed to Mount Agung. Arriving at the crater of the mountain, Manik Angkeran sounded the magic bell and prayed to make Naga Basuki come out. Manik Angkeran told about the debt he had. Feeling compassion, Naga Basuki gave the treasure to Manik Angkeran. Indeed, basically Manik Angkeran has a greedy nature, when Manik Angkeran saw that there was a large jewel on Naga Basuki's tail, he immediately drew his sword, cut the dragon's tail then ran away from the place. Naga Basuki felt pain and became angry. Naga Basuki licks the footprints of Manik Angkeran. So instantly, Manik Angkeran's body was burnt to ashes.
6. Naga Basuki revives Manik Angkeran with conditions
Mpu Sidi Mantra was worried because Manik Angkeran had not returned home for several days. Mpu rushed to find her son, and chose to go to Naga Basuki's place because he knew his sacred bell was missing. Arriving at Mount Agung, Mpu Sidi Mantra told Naga Basuki that he was looking for his son who had disappeared for several days. Naga Basuki said that Mpu Sidi Mantra no longer needed to look for Manik Angkeran because he had already killed him. Mpu Sidi Mantra then begged for his son to be revived. Naga Basuki is willing to revive Manik Angkeran, but with one condition. The condition is that Manik Angkeran must return the dragon Basuki's tail and live separately from his father. Manik Angkeran was then revived by Naga Basuki, then Manik Angkeran returned the dragon's tail while promising to become a better human being and to live where Naga Basuki lived.
7. Mpu Sidi Mantra had to separate from his son
Mpu Sidi Mantra was very happy to see his son alive again. Mpu Sidi Mantra then said goodbye to Naga Basukih to return to East Java. Arriving in the area between the islands of Bali and Java, Mpu Sidi Mantra took out his magic stick while incising the stick on the ground, as if to mark the boundary between the islands of Bali and Java.

Over time, the stick's incision gets bigger and filled with water. The area was increasingly submerged under water and became a strait which is now named the Bali Strait. This strait separates the islands of Bali and Java.

The story of the beginning of the separation of the islands of Bali and Java has many versions, but the core is the same. Based on this story, there is a lesson that can be taken. That one should not be greedy, greedy, arrogant and live extravagantly as long as one has a lot of wealth, because there must be a reward later.
